Why Effective Communication with Your Child About School is Vital to Their Success

As a force of habit, parents, upon first seeing their child after school, ask the question, “How was school today?” There is nothing wrong with the question itself; it is just that parents who truly want to know about their children’s educational and social lives at school will not get the answer they want. There are many good reasons to want an answer better than, “Fine,” or “Okay.” Research shows that children are more likely to do better in school when they feel that parents are involved, or interested, in their education. Not only is your child likely to be a better student if they think that you are invested in their life, you might also get a chance to delve deeper and develop a real understanding of each other.

As one of the most successful American curriculum schools in Sharjah , ASCS understands the importance of open communication between students and their parents, especially when it comes to school. Instead of putting your child on the spot, let them relax when they have just gotten home from school. Let the conversation start naturally as you’re helping them with homework or doing chores together. Often, it’s better to let them tell you about their day by recounting your own. Tell them an interesting anecdote and prompt them to share something that happened to them during their day. Remember to listen and observe.

If you know the general routine of their school week, you can ask more meaningful or specific questions like what new things they saw in show-and-tell this week, or, for older kids, how basketball practice went. Children should know they can talk to you whenever they want and not just when there is a problem at school. However, when a problem does occur, try to encourage them to come up with their own solutions first, and check back with them to see if things have gotten better.

ASCS seeks to set itself apart from other American curriculum schools in Sharjah . This is why, in addition to parent-child communication, the existence of a parent-school relationship is also very important to us. The more actively involved parents are, the better our students will do. Parents of our students are not only kept informed of the latest events and their child’s academic progress, they are also given a voice. When parents have a real part to play in their children’s education, whether through actively participating in school events or just staying in touch with their child’s teachers, everyone wins.
