How can you help your child transition to a different school?

Moving your child to a different school isn’t easy, even when you know it’s the right decision (especially if it concerns one of the few American curriculum schools in Sharjah). If you need to move your child to a different school, it’s important to remember that children are adaptable, but they do need to be mentally prepared. With some planning and support, they can transition from the newcomer into a happily integrated child in no time.

Here are a few steps to make your child’s transition to a new school easier for everyone.

Be open

Children are naturally inquisitive and in a situation where they are directly impacted, they are likely to be curious. Questions could be as simple as what the break timings are, what subjects are offered, or what kind of extracurricular activities are available. They might even be concerned about the school's facilities, especially if their previous school had many. You should find out information about the school in advance so that you can address their concerns before the move.

Be proactive

Speak to the school to arrange a tour with your child. At the Sharjah’s American School of Creative Science, we encourage parents to visit the school with their children so that they have an opportunity to meet the teachers and ask any questions. This builds a level of trust with the child, which helps them feel more comfortable with their new school.

Be positive

Children are often a reflection of their parents, and if they sense that you are uncertain or anxious, they are likely to mimic your behavior. Let your child know that wherever they’re going is a stepping stone and that they will have many new opportunities. Create an opportunity to bond over the experience by reviewing the school website together, and look for extracurricular activities that might interest your child.

Be involved

When your child goes to school, make it a point to find out about their school life by getting involved with volunteer activities, such as the parent’s committee. Also, talk with your child about their friends and encourage them to invite their friends over to play in the afternoon or even volunteer to take them out to the movie or mall. The moment your child feels socially integrated, adapting to the new school will become much easier.

Be patient

Remember that it takes time to adjust to any change. Allow your child the time to get comfortable in their new space. Let them orient themselves to the teachers, the grading system and the school’s culture. While grades might fluctuate initially, remember that this is not permanent. Be supportive and attentive.

Eventually, your child will make the transition, but if you feel there are still some obstacles, speak to the teachers. Being among the best American curriculum schools in Sharjah means that we are involved in making your child’s integration as seamless as possible.
