Should you move your child to a new school?

As parents, you want to  provide your child with the best education possible. You make decisions about their academic future in the hope that it will pay off in the form of future success.  At times, these decisions need to be reconsidered, including where your child attends school. However, this is a difficult decision requiring parents to weigh many different factors to make the right decision for their child. When might parents consider moving their child to a different school?

Most families think about shifting schools when the child graduates from primary school or if they are relocating to a new home. These are decisions made out of necessity and may not include a re-evaluation of the child’s current academic standing or foundation. However, at each stage of the child’s academic career, parents shou ld sit down and reassess whether their child is advancing at a desirable pace or is receiving the stimulation they require.

Parents should familiarize themselves with the latest trends in education to understand what their children will experience every day at school, and learn what would be the best fit for each student.  Generally, schools should focus on nurturing students so that they can become innovative, creative and intelligent global citizens who have studied under an internationally-recognized system of learning. With that general framework in place, parents can explore the different curricula available to choose the best option for their child.

Sometimes, the decision to change schools is made out of concern for the child’s well-being. When a child feels uncomfortable, out-of-place, or is being bullied, parents may consider changing schools. In this case, one of the most important factors to consider is how the school addresses student well-being and bullying. Parents can ask schools about their student conduct policies, counselling services, and personalized classroom approaches.

Parents may also consider moving schools if their child’s current school facilities are out-of-date. To compete in the digital age, students need to be exposed to a vast range of technology, both in and out of the classroom. As a leading American curriculum school in Dubai, we make technological resources available to all of our students, including tablets, e-resources, interactive whiteboards, and ActiVotes, as well as our dedicated Learning Resource Center. Facilities, including sports facilities and ICT rooms,  are also available for extra-curricular or co-curricular learning. We have also established the Why room, a special area for older students to design and innovate in science. Our creative play room is designed to let younger students explore their imaginations.

As one of the leading American curriculum schools in Dubai, we think young minds should be nurtured in a supportive learning environment. That’s why we work with parents considering transferring their children, no matter the reason, so that they can find the educational setting where students thrive.
