Thought: The role of schools in preparing students for the new job market

Today’s youth are children of the 21st century, a rapidly changing era characterized by massive shifts in technological advancement and globalization. Consequently, certain skill sets are becoming obsolete while new careers and cross-functional roles are constantly emerging to reshape the present and future job market. According to Fast Company, 80 percent of primary school students will either work in jobs that don’t yet exist or are based mostly on STEM skills.

The concern that arises is how to train our younger generation for new careers if their current skills sets will become obsolete before their first year in college. The answer to this alarming situation lies in integrated, interdisciplinary education system based on STEM skills that teaches students to become life-long learners, progressive and analytical thinkers, and innovative, cross-disciplinary members of the 21st century workforce.

Schools like the American School of Creative Science – Maliha, among the best American schools in Sharjah, now serve as stepping stones for our students’ life goals. We not only provide the students with thorough academic courses, such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics, but we also offer an enriching array of co- and extra-curricular activities. This holistic approach to learning promotes insightful, self-directed learning and creativity.

Through a series of classroom activities and interactive resources, students at American School of Creative Science – Maliha are taught the importance of:

  • Teamwork:
    • Through group projects and assignments, students are taught the value of communication, collaboration, and sharing whilst also being contributing members of a team.
  • Complex thinking:
    • Students are taught crucial critical thinking and decision-making skills by working on simulations or assignments where the goal isn’t simply a set solution. There could be a number of potential outcomes and many different paths to those possibilities. Aside from these valuable (and transferable) skills, students are encouraged to develop creativity and innovation through various activity stations and time spent in the ITs room.
  • Entrepreneurship:
    • Students need to embrace the spirit of entrepreneurship, and this starts with the right mindset. With interactive classroom activities, hands-on-learning about business, and exposure to the challenges of start-up ventures, students can explore opportunities and foster their creativity and ambition. This will prepare them to be flexible in their outlook and ready to seize the opportunity and reap the benefits as the future of workforce.

With its integrated curriculum, interactive resources and non-scholastic activities, the American School of Creative Science – Maliha is one of the best schools in Sharjah. Its students are resilient, resourceful, and responsible higher-order thinkers with a creative and analytical mindset that will guide them as they pursue their careers.
