Initiatives: American School of Creative Sciences: Maliha Road Media Club

As our students’ future career opportunities diversify, we want to help them discover where they can best put their talents to use. With the growth of media in the region, secondary schools in Sharjah need to provide exposure to filmmaking and video production to their students.

One of the new subjects we have introduced at American School of Creative Science — Maliha Road is the Media Production elective for Grade 11 and Digital Media Production for Grade 12.

To fulfill their course project requirement, Grade 11 students produce their first films, using their mobile phones for shooting and editing. We also provide six Canon D750 cameras and one GoPro camera that students can check out for their projects. For editing and animation, we will soon be offering modules using Adobe Premiere, a software program that helps students produce broadcast-quality, high-definition videos.

In addition to this course, our students regularly take part in extracurricular activities to further hone their film-making skills. This year, our students are organizing the Moving Thoughts Film Festival, which will feature the works of students from the BEAM network as well as neighboring schools, such as the Australian International School and Sharjah English School. After the film festival, our students will host the Aspiring Photographer Competition.

Our students also participate in regular external competitions. Our Media Production elective students have produced films focusing on environmental themes, which were shortlisted in the Sharjah Sustainability Awards’ short film competition, held at the American University of Sharjah in April. Seven of our students’ films were also shortlisted for the Children’s International Film Festival in May.

We hope to continue fostering our talented students’ love for filmmaking in the future.
