5 Ways to Have a Healthy Ramadan

Ramadan is a time of introspection, spirituality and endurance. Perhaps the most joyous time of the day is the Iftar, which marks the end of the fast. At the American School of Creative Science Maliha Road, students and teachers are encouraged to make smart decisions during the holy month of Ramadan and ensure that together we demonstrate why we always aim to be the best American school in Sharjah.

Get up for Suhoor

It’s important to resist the temptation to be sleep in and not get up for Suhoor. This is the meal which stores up nutrients while the body undergoes the rigorous fast. Skipping Suhoor leads to lethargy, low energy reserves and lack of concentration in school and at home. Eggs, cheese and oats are good options for Suhoor because they release energy slowly.

Avoid feasting at Iftar

One should steer clear of huge Iftars with fatty and fried foods, which can lead to weight gain and even clogging of arteries and obesity. Food should not be thought of as the prize at the end of the tunnel, but rather as a blessing to be slowly savored. Avoid junk food which contains empty calories. Eat slowly so that food gets digested properly. If you eat too quickly, it will lead to indigestion, gas, and heartburn.

Enjoy a healthy diet

Consider baking, roasting and steaming instead of frying. Add lentils, vegetables or tomato soup to your Iftar table. These healthy options have a high water content. Avoid Cream based soups. Fruits should also be served as part of a balanced diet as they are rich in minerals, fiber, and vitamins and have few calories. Choose good carbs such as whole grain bread, brown rice or potatoes. Eat protein that contains amino acids, such as yogurt, fish, cheese, poultry, beef or turkey, which are used by your body to build muscle mass and is essential for growing children.

Water is the way

Drink water before eating, because this will prevent dehydration. It is better to drink water before you start eating rather than during the meal, because that will interfere with your digestion. Do not keep fizzy drinks on the table because they are full of sugar and will lead to increase in thirst while fasting. Avoid having caffeinated drinks or have as little as possible. Along with plain water, coconut water is also a good option to keep yourself hydrated.

Breaking a fast can be so sweet

The traditional way of breaking your fast is to have dates. They contain natural sugar which will give you energy and banish any lingering headache. Instead of having sugary desserts and drinks, eat fruits, dried fruits, fruit salads and drink fresh juice for natural sugar.
